This turned out to be a hearth fire not infrequent
even in my early days as a fireman.
The routine involved lifting the floor boards, uncovering the extent
of the fire and before leaving, trimming the joists under the hearth
so that when reconstructed the heat of the fire did not again set
fire to the heath timbers.
A detail now covered by the building regulation.
