A good chance to show the brigade off to
its best advantage. Started with a church service.
Note they had a supervising role concerning the torchlight procession
and no doubt gave torches only to those who they deemed responsible.
There are several recorded occurrences of other festivities in
different towns where occasionally things went awry, some times
even when controlled by the brigade.
Even today a lot of care needs to be exercised to make sure that
the location and conditions are safe.
Sometimes the control is well in evidence, sometimes rather more
quietly supervised. The location and contents of the bonfire gives
much concern.
