The fire was discovered by a Mr Kent who was
passing going from the railway station to the barracks.
The occupier,Army Captain Archibald Sinclair, heir to the 13th
Baron Sinclair, was in the bath when the alarm was raised. The Garrison
Brigades were alerted and attended as was Andover Town Brigade.
The Council had still not resolved the horsing problems even after
a special meeting for that purpose the previous week.They were lucky
the Captain of the Brigade eventually got horses from Mr Bain at
the Star and Garter Hotel but they gave some trouble.
Some household effects were salvaged but much was lost including
jewelry and household effects.
Cause of fire is shown.
The Commanding Officer sent a message of congratulations to the
garrison personnel . He mentioned a Corporal Trent by name and in
particular his controlling influence over the military brigades
efforts.
